Jukendo: Basic Exercises, Datotso Tsuke San Bon (銃剣道: 基本)

Same exercise as Chokutotsu except striking Ura instead of Omote. This is the second or third exercise we do each class.
  • Receiver makes a slight sweep to his/her right of the attackers kissaki, maybe an inch
  • Receiver yells Hazose Tsuke
  •  As the attacker starts moving the receiver lifts their kissaki about half an inch diagonally up and away from the heart
  • The Attacker hits ura tsuke (suite) with a single step forward.
  • Attacker withdraws the strike (nuite) standing still but moving balance back to vertical
  • Receiver then makes two teeny tiny steps back to Issoku, ideally of about the same size for each step
  • Receiver yells Onagi (repeat / the same) and so it repeats. 3 strikes are made.
  • After the last strike and 2 step withdrawal by the receiver the little shake of the gun is made indicating time to change roles
  • Entire process is repeated with roles reversed
Important Points:
  • The strike should be almost completely straight. Do not drop your kissaki to "go under" the opponents weapon. This requires cooperation of both people.
  • It appears I have been wrong about the timing of the opening and the yelling and the striking. Openings should be made after the attacker has started moving.
  • When the receiver is stepping back to issoku the first step brings the barrels together and the second step the receiver ducks their kissaki under the attackers. Not a big drop, try to maintain contact between the two mokuju during this process.

My thoughts:
  • I believe the three basic strikes in kihon should be effectively the same thing for the attacker and all that changes is the receiver moving their arm and gun around for the different openings.
  • Ewa is better in this video with regard to the dropping of the barrel. Her receiving the first time is very good I think.
